IRELAND SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT

I dont know about you but I very much want Ireland to win both of these tests.  Development is important that is no doubt, but with an Emerging Ireland tour planned for later in the year I see no reason why we shouldn’t do what we can to make these matches the clash of titans the rest of the rugby world expects it to be -back to back RWC champs v back-to-back 6N champs, with the Boks VERY keen to put the most recent results between the two behind them.  Besides, it’s not like we won’t get some chance to see how we get on without regulars in the 23 with JGP and Conan missing out.

Thanks to Murray Kinsella’s breakdown of the positions below, I have had a go at selecting my matchday 23 for the first test, I’ve even included a new cap that wouldn’t be Leinster fancy that!!  6/2 bench has to be right for Loftus I’d say.

O’Brien, Nash, Henshaw, Aki, Lowe, Crowley, Casey

Porter, Sheehan, Furlong, McCarthy, Beirne, O’Mahony (c), van der Flier, Doris

Kelleher, Healy, Bealham, Ryan, Baird, Izuchukwu, Murray, Frawley.

CGP RIP

Awful, awful news.  Way, way too young.  His parents both played rugby in Ireland back in the 90s.

24/25 CHAMPIONS CUP DRAW

Competition draws aren’t exactly sexy topics and the one for next season’s Champions Cup isn’t until Tuesday July 2, and although the competition format hasn’t changed there was some news specific to Leinster in today’s press release from EPCR…

For the purposes of the draw, the clubs will be divided into two tiers, Tier 1 and Tier 2. The four clubs in Tier 1 will be: Stade Toulousain (2024 Investec Champions Cup winners), Northampton Saints (2024 Gallagher Premiership winners), as well as the 2024 URC and 🔝🐱🐴  winners. If Stade Toulousain win the 🔝🐱🐴  title, then the Investec Champions Cup final runners-up, Leinster Rugby, will be included in Tier 1.

WRAP OF A WRAP

Wrapping defeats are never fun on the one hand, but on the other there’s still the whole “show must go on” of it all so we did a full wrap pod where as well as a shortened “match timeline section” we also went back over Leinster’s season overall.  Tom Coleman & Mark Jackson seem to be getting more than their share of bad results when they appear on the pod but they still did a great job.

As you can see below we also found time to harp on a couple of extra relevant topics, all of them have been getting decent engagement over the past few days.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe there too and/or leave a review if you can.

LEINSTER’S & IRELAND’S 1-SCORE LOSSES

Lead-in question : OK now I’d like to chat for a bit about one-score matches.  Much has been said about the Springboks winning their second World Cup in a row on the back of three successive one-point victories, and then of course Jacques Nienaber switched to Leinster where as you can see by the screen there, we’ve had a string of defeats in recent seasons of 5 points or less, and I have also added results of the Irish team as well as, just for good measure, the Munster semifinal loss as they had both the Irish captain and starting outhalf playing for them.  You can say each and every one of these results played a part in an Irish team falling short of silverware so starting with yourself Tom, is there a pattern to be seen here?

THE RESULTS IN QUESTION :

FRA 30-24 IRE, LEI 21-24 LAR, LEI 26-27 BUL, LEI 15-16 MUN,  LEI 26-27 LAR, IRE 24-28 NZL

LEI 21-22 ULS, ENG 23-22 IRE, TLS 15-15* LEI, ULS 23-21 LEI, BUL 25-20 LEI, MUN 10-17 GLA

* = after 80m

THE LEO CULLEN DEBATE

Lead-in question : This is a discussion I have tried to steer away from for quite a while now but it has been bubbling under the surface among Leinster fans on the social media platforms I’d say since our defeat in the Marseille final so obviously by now after two more campaigns gone without silverware, the calls are getting even louder so it’s probably about time we harped on it.  On the one hand you don’t want the very ‘footbally’ knee-jerk reactions to defeats calling for the coach to be fired, I mean most clubs in Europe wouldn’t come close to competing on two fronts every season the way we do, but on the other hand when you’ve won 4 Heineken Cups and 8 league titles over the years, the standards are always going to be high and for the past few seasons Leinster have fallen short.  So starting with yourself Mark, is it time for a change at the top?

HOGG SAGA LATEST

After deciding to leave out the Front Five this week, there ended up being four stories I felt I had to include in the column so I’m sure I could have found a fifth to keep the segment going, but then again with this Hogg story returning like an awful smell I figured it best to shift it further down the page.

Not exactly wild about how RugbyPass framed Hogg’s situation – “blighted by personal problems” suggests there might be someone to blame other than the man himself.

Let’s just say I will absolutely not be supporting MHR next season and I’m delighted there is very little chance Leinster will be playing them.

TROLL PATROL

A couple of weeks ago, I challenged a trolling comment from ‘mahasamatman’ offering them to appear on the pod…the challenge was genuine and if I got a response I would take steps to make it happen.  As you can see by their latest offering, it looks like they are choosing to ignore my invitation.  🐔

If you ever see an online contribution that seems worthy of inclusion here, by all means do share.

“SVNS” UPDATE

No Irish teams in action until next weekend in Hamburg (see fixtures below) but there is still a lot of relevant stuff going on in the 7s world, not least of which was the announcement of the squads for the Olympics, with Lucy Rock & Harry McNulty named the respective captains.

We will know our opponents in Paris by this Sunday evening when the draw is made following the Monaco 7s which will decide the last 4 qualifiers in each gender.  Those tournaments will be streamed live on RugbyPassTV over the weekend with the like of GB and RSA involved on the men’s side and Argentina on the women’s.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

All season we have been highlighting on these pages what a bad season La Rochelle are having yet they go and make the final four to face their nemesis Toulouse, who may be polishing their 6th star but with this seeming to be the Year of The Nemesis Reversal (Leinster beating LAR twice, Toulouse beating Leinster) plus the fact that the French play their semifinals on “neutral” grounds (not so much in Bordeaux’s case) you wouldn’t bet against them having another crack at a first Brennus.

That said, as you see in the segment on the Champion Cup draw earlier in the column, a Toulouse win would help Leinster out, so there’s that.

Meanwhile the other semifinal appears to be a tossup between Stade would would be favourites on form if it were held in any other city but UBB will be keen to use every advantage possible to reverse their Champions Cup quarterfinal disappointment.

Then there’s Montpellier who stayed in the top flight by the skin of their teeth with a two point win over Grenoble.  We’ll still be covering both sides on these pages next season as I plan to include the ProD2 in our update section.

Not a good day for future Leinster employees Jordie Barrett and Tyler Bleyendaal…hopefully the Hurricane’s exit in the semifinals won’t have a bearing on how they get on when they travel north!  Still promises to be a fascinating Auckland v Waikato final, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Blues and I’m not sure they’ll get a better chance than this to lift their first SR title since 2003.

MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY UPDATE

Really big win for my adopted team the Chicago Hounds, with Dave Kearney, Nick McCarthy, Jack Carty and Paddy Ryan all starting as they defeated San Diego (complete with Matt Giteau and the still-scoring-tries-at-42 Ma’a Nonu) to put them all but in the playoffs, with chances in the final two rounds to move up even higher.

Elsewhere Houston edged Seattle to stay top in the west while New England need just one more win to lock down home advantage in the east.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

Glasgow’s win at Thomond Park not only ended the provinces’ URC hopes, but with Kristian gambling for the upset it has also looked like handing him the HPL title.  With the multiplier in force for the playoffs, Kino CAN catch him, but only if they make different picks for the final and his is the right one.  The Superbru app only tells you who others have chosen when the matches kick off, and if it turns out that they made the same selection then the title belongs to Kristian.

Jay is guaranteed 3rd place but as for me in 4th, I’m anything but – in fact, with Conor, Mark & Tom all breathing down my neck I could finish as low as 7th so I’ll have to make my final decision very carefully.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

The plan is to take a break for at least a week with the next planned content on these pages being another 80+ column next Wednesday.  But I’m sure in the meantime I’ll be tempted to drop the odd x or TikTok along the way so do keep an eye out.

Plus I’ll be appearing on Caolán Scully’s pod from Thursday evening as well as our regular Dublin South FM slot so there’s always harpin’ going on somewhere!

And as ever, be sure to enjoy your rugby wherever you are.  JLP

FRONT FIVE

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

…against Aironi in February 2011, Ruddock became the youngest ever Leinster captain when only 20 years of age

Ruddock To Retire At End Of The Season

IrishRugby.ie

JLP : After Leo Cullen, I really don’t think there has been a player who has personified what Leinster Rugby is all about other than Rhys Ruddock.  Haven’t seen much of him this season and we’ve all kind of known this announcement was coming eventually, but while it is sad news after a really depressing weekend for fans of the province, in a way it has been a joy to be able to look back over his career and remember all the many good times.  Leadership always came naturally to him which clearly our coaches spotted by handing him the armband so early.  And in recent years the mere existence of the term “Rhys Ruddock All Stars” among the fans (meaning the teams we have sent for our late season South African tours) shows the high regard in which he is held.

“The lads literally just gave me slots of where they would normally address defence. I just went into that. I just slotted in with the programme, as it was.”

Jacques Nienaber: Leinster haven’t been neglecting attack

Neil Treacy – RTÉ Rugby

JLP : This was always going to be a tough week for Leinster coach at pressers, and Nienaber has done well to front up.  And sadly since full time on Saturday the calls for Leo Cullen to step aside have started to get louder from Leinster fans, there were suggestions of it last year but now they are getting stronger, though to be clear I really don’t think I’m there yet – I mean, I’m never happy about actively looking for anyone to lose their job as it is, but in this specific case I can see where the viewpoint is coming from.

The thing about Leo is that if he stays, which I believe he will,  absolutely nothing we do next season will matter except winning the CC, that is if we reach the final of course. So doubts will remain locked and loaded right up to the final whistle in Cardiff.  Possibly that pressure will ease a bit if we win URC but still it’s going to be immense and it will be felt from the most casual fan right through the squad and into the coaches’ box.  A new hierarchy structure would definitely ease that pressure somewhat, although having said that, Leinster are pretty much expected to be competing for titles regardless so the standards will have to remain high whatever the coaching ticket.

Much to ponder for sure.

Ireland will face stiff competition in Pool B, starting their campaign against Italy, followed by matches against Georgia and Australia.

Ireland at Under20 World Cup

Joe Naughton – SportsNews Ireland

JLP : With the senior season almost over it’s always good to get a reminder of the annual festival of rugby we get every June and July – this year it overlaps with the test team’s two-match series, also in South Africa, but it still gives us plenty to harp on before the Rugby Championship comes along to kill off the remaining weeks to the 2024/25 URC season and it all starts again!  Love it.

The diminutive wing has bundles of pace and would provide further back three depth with Simon Zebo set to retire at the end of this season.

Munster Set To Sign Cheslin Kolbe-esque Wing From Lyon

Rob O’Halloran – Balls.ie

JLP : This article nearly won Clickbait of the Week with the way the headline dumps a ton of pressure on Thaakir Abrahams should he indeed be heading to Munster.  But instead I have included it as one of a two-article set from Balls.ie, the second of which is this one by Gary Connaughton about Ulster’s new outhalf signing Aidan Morgan (also with clickbaity headline describing him as “intriguing”) and together the pieces highlight the fact that despite all the hoopla about Leinster’s recent announcements, the other provinces have also been busy on the acquisition front.

***CLICKBAIT OF THE WEEK AWARD***

The only way to fittingly respond is to go and win the URC the hard way, going away in the semi-final and final.

Muddled No 10 picture, poor attack and refusal to take points – strategic errors cost Leinster the ultimate prize

Rúaidhrí O’Connor – Irish Independent

JLP : Again, to clarify, my COTWA is not meant for an article I necessarily disagree with, and much of the points ROC makes here are ones we have made on the pod.  It’s more about the presentation of the article with both the headline and the promoting tweet, put in a way as to attract both angry Leinster fans AND gleeful ABL ones.

WRAP OF A WRAP

Confession time first – I made a claim on the first draft of the pod about Antoine Dupont’s first half wonder-5022 where I was totally wrong…I thought the ball had been carried back from our half but in fact there had been a breakdown or two and kudos to the person who got in touch for both setting me straight AND doing it discreetly.  Still, the pod had already gotten about a hundred listens by the time I corrected it and I’m certainly not going to try and pretend I didn’t say it, that’s one of the reasons I have this column.

Anyway going back to what DID make the final cut, Tom & Mark were open and honest going back over the match and as I often find it does help to have a chat about it.  Also a big shout out to both Keego & Kino for their contributions on the preview show, even if that does seem about a gagillion years ago by this stage!!!

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe there too and/or leave a review if you can.

Also here’s a clip where we looked mostly at how Leinster handled substitutions in the second half…

CC FINAL – THE FAN EXPERIENCE

We stopped recording “bonus clips” a while ago but on this week’s wrap pod had a section that was left on the ‘cutting room’ floor as I try to stay under an hour as much as I can so I put it out as extra YouTube content…Tom spoke about his experience in and around Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

POST FINAL TIKTOK

No time (or motivation tbh) to put together a “Quick Tap” video this week (while I enjoy doing them you’re talking up to two hours work in total to produce just a 4-min vid) so instead I’ll share this one I recorded within about half an hour of the final whistle on Saturday.  Got a lot of attention, possibly out of empathy from fellow Leinster fans but no doubt there were plenty of Nelson Muntzes out there too going “ha-ha”, such is the nature of sports fan content!!!  TikTok following moved past 700 which I’m pretty pleased about since it’s far from my main focus, I should probably look to do more with the account next season.

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Really, really difficult selection this week based on the update.  We have said several times on the pod how we want us to go as strong as possible from now until the end of the season but what with the extra time in London, six-day turnaround AND Hugo Keenan off to join the 7s, to put a 23 together for the Connacht match sure wasn’t easy.

Obviously my “Ruddock as captain” choice is for a specific reason and it wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t feature at all and Penny has the armband, but overall I have to think at least a few who came off the bench in the final will have to do so again at the RDS.  I certainly don’t see any from the “further assessment required” section to make it in time although it would be brilliant if even one of them did.

Harpin’ matchday 23 v Connacht : McErlean, Russell, J O’Brien, Brownlee, A Osborne, H Byrne, McGrath

Milne, McKee, Clarkson, Molony, Deeny, Ruddock (c), Penny, Deegan

Kelleher, Boyle, Ala’alatoa, O’Tighearnaigh, Moloney, Foley, Prendergast, King

NB : the above matchday 23s are completely from my own mind, I’m certainly not suggesting I have any ITK a la Thornley

OFFICIAL LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

INJURY UPDATE – FURTHER ASSESSMENT REQUIRED:

Garry Ringrose: will increase his training load again this week as he continues to be assessed for a shoulder injury.

Tommy O’Brien: will return to training this week from a hamstring injury and will be further assessed before a decision is made on his involvement.

Charlie Ngatai: will return to training this week from a shoulder injury and will be further assessed before a decision is made on his involvement.

INJURY UPDATE – UNAVAILABLE FOR SELECTION:

Jason Jenkins: picked up a knee injury against Toulouse and will not be available for selection this week.

NO FURTHER UPDATES ON:

Liam Turner (arm), Lee Barron (shoulder), Alex Soroka (foot).

URC IRISH SHIELD UPDATE

Just a quick reminder…for the past two URC campaigns, this shield was decided by overall league performance.  Now it is only by the interpros, which is why in-form Munster are out of contention after their poor start to the season.  Basically Leinster need a 5-pointer on Friday to force Ulster to require a win in Thomond Park on Saturday.  Although they’ll probably want that anyway to help their league ranking.

TROLL PATROL

We recently introduced Clickbait of the Week to point out cases of ADD (Article Description Deception) but for a long time now I have also been looking to launch Troll Patrol.  Because why ridicule them online and fall down a rabbit hole when you can ridicule them here instead?  What’s that?  I could always not ridicule them at all?  FFS where’s the fun in THAT?

Seriously though…the Game Management vid I posted above got a lot of comment reaction (at least a lot for our channel) and I thought one in particular was a worthy candidate for our first ever TP segment.

Credit where it’s due to this chap, he felt the need to come back three times before anyone had a chance to reply but it was his final point that put him over the top, so to speak.

@michaelflynn5123

Hugo Keenan played against Ulster week before final ! First time he has ever played in ravenhill ! First team not allowed to play away from home if there a chance they could lose ! Oh we lost because it was the b team

Why can’t you see ! Play your best team in the final ! What about the games leading up to the final! You have to play week after week to be ready for the big games! Oh they played ospreys couple weeks before the final! Last 3 years same thing

Leinster haven’t been put under pressure all year La Rochelle where lucky to get out of there group Northampton didn’t turn up on the day ! First team not allowed to play in south Africa! We’re under no pressure all year! Weren’t battle hardened! Munster would get 3 players on the Leinster team! But I think they would have beaten Toulouse! But then again they can leave home and fight

So…Munster would have beaten Toulouse?  Because they can ‘leave home and fight’?  And…how would they have gotten the chance to beat Toulouse?  By leaving home, fighting, and defeating Northampton.  How did they get on? 😜

If you ever see an online contribution that seems worthy of inclusion here, by all means do share.

“SVNS” UPDATE

Under the new series format, this weekend’s sevens event will actually decide the overall champions of the circuit.  I know many don’t like that but I for one don’t mind.  If nothing else it will be a good experience for both Irish teams as they prepare for the Olympics.  With the tournament in Spain the kickoff times are definitely more friendly for Irish viewers for sure and of course there will be no easy matches.

I made my reservations on Hugo Keenan’s involvement clear on these pages already so no need to go over them again – he’s in the squad now and he will of course be a massive boost for our chances and I look forward to cheering on both teams over the weekend.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

Not sure how to word this point without making it look like I’m getting some consolation from it, but I assure you I’m not – I’d say the last place ROG would want to be heading this weekend is to a Toulouse town celebrating a sixth star.  That said, he might equally view it as an opportunity to catch them on the hop and in a season where Leinster got the LAR monkey off our back and Toulouse did likewise with us, maybe this is just the weekend for him to end his recent run of poor results against ‘les rouge at noir’.  Meanwhile the scramble to make the top 6 remains interesting with everyone down to Lyon in 12th mathematically still in the running by the looks of it, and 6th placed Racing v 7th place Pau the pick of the bunch this weekend.

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC UPDATE

As poor an all as the Crusaders’ form has been all season, with 8 of the 12 clubs making the playoffs, I have always maintained that it would be mad to rule them out completely until they mathematically can’t win yet another title and having defeated the table topping Blues last weekend, there’s every chance they could face the Auckland lads again in the quarterfinals.  They’ll need to beat Moana in Round 15 and hope both the Drua and Western Force slip up, but none of that is impossible.   Meanwhile the race for that top seed between the Blues and the Hurricanes should be interesting, both are at home in the final round but against fellow NZ franchises so no easy wins there.

I had hoped to catch the Grand Final but needless to say after Saturday I wasn’t exactly in a place where watching any more rugby was on my radar but it sounds like an enthralling match with the seemingly invincible Wild Knights falling short against Richie Mo’unga’s Brave Lupus.  Here’s the video if you want a look yourself.

MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY UPDATE

Another defeat for my adopted MLR team the Chicago Hounds this week, they definitely seem to need the week off in the next round so they can prepare for the push to the playoffs.  Miami’s shock win over New England makes things tight at the top of the Eastern Conference while out west, it’s still Houston and Seattle battling it out.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

I came from way behind to lift the title last season but I really don’t fancy my chances of doing it again this time around.  In fact if I’m not careful I could drop as far as 7th, though that would still spare me from having to sport The Jersey of Shame.  Looks like a straight fight betwen Kino and Kristian with just 15 matches left to predict, 8 of which are this coming weekend.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

Very much looking forward to returning to the RDS on Friday and hopefully the boys in blue can help ease the pain from last weekend.  We’ll have our preview pod for the Connacht match on Thursday afternoon, then our wrap pod is to hopefully introduce a new Harpin contributor, please do stay tuned and join in the conversation in any way you can.

And as ever, be sure to enjoy your rugby wherever you are.  JLP

JLP : When I saw the headline for this article in the Irish Times I immediately thought “fluff piece”, admittedly without reading it since they made it “subscriber only” but it wasn’t a great leap to work out it was overwhelmingly positive about his time at the IRFU.  I considered writing a counter article myself until I found out via a substack subscription to friend-of-the-pod IrishWomensSC that it had already been done for me.  It’s quite simple.  He took the job overseeing ALL of Irish rugby in June 2014.  Just a couple of months late, the Irish women reach a World Cup semifinal.  Jump ahead to 2023 and while the men may not have yet done the same, they are still winning Grand Slams, reaching number 1 in the rankings and ticking other long-standing “never done” boxes while the women sunk to missing a World Cup altogether and finishing rock bottom of the Six Nations.  Has there been something of a rebound since those depths? Yes.  But it’s all part of his legacy and for me the IT article cannot be appreciated without reading the IWSC one for context.

If you follow the link to her substack please subscribe and support her work if you can.

UPDATE – Just as I’m posting this column news is emerging about a new IRFU funding model, I won’t have time to study it properly so I’ll try to have a better critique by next week.

“…we’re a different team than we were three years ago and four years ago, and we keep getting better.”

Emmanuel Meafou and Toulouse on revenge mission against Leinster

Neil Treacy – RTÉ.ie

JLP : This 80+ column is meant to cover topics outside of Leinster rugby but when there’s a major final on the horizon a story or two is bound to creep in.  And one of the biggest narratives leading into Saturday’s clash of the European titans is that Leinster have owned Toulouse on the last number of meetings, but given how we have handled La Rochelle’s ‘owning’ of us this season, it’s pretty clear that things can change and they are bound to be highly motivated, especially when you factor in Ireland’s BP win in France too.

O’Reilly might have reached even loftier heights in the game had his burgeoning business career not intervened at the age of 26

Tony O’Reilly: the Lions cub who earned place in Irish sporting folklore

Robert Kitson – The Guardian

JLP : Have to admit my knowledge on this Irish rugby great wasn’t what it should have been, and articles like this one helped bring me up to speed after his sad passing.

Hogg, 31, who has been blighted by legal and personal problems since walking away from the sport at the end of last season

Stuart Hogg in talks with Gallagher Premiership club

Neil Fissler – RugbyPass.com

JLP : Look – whether he resumes his playing career is totally between himself and any club who wishes to avail of his services, but the framing in that quote???  “He has been blighted” suggests the whole thing is being done to him.  I’m not going to list all the accusations against him here but I reckon Mr Fissler could have, as it would definitely bring proper context to the article.

***CLICKBAIT OF THE WEEK AWARD***

The pecking order at outhalf post Sexton seems a little clearer now but does it give comfort to fans?

Leinster signings, re-signings and depth for the future

OverTheHillProp

JLP : Easy choice for COTWA this week.  And I don’t necessarily mean it in a bad way, like I have said before, the “Anyone But Leinster” narrative is absolutely fine once everyone appreciates it exists.  If nothing else articles like this one from OTHP are good when it comes to “keeping Leinster honest” and he does make good points.  It’s the timing that earns the clickbait tag for me since it was posted knowing a full week of social media posts from Leinster fans looking forward to a major final was imminent.

WRAP OF A WRAP

I keep forgetting to mention our preview in this column – I suppose that since we are looking ahead to a match in the video and by the time I write this the match has been done and dusted, it’s easy to forget but those videos, mostly featuring Keego, are a vital part of our weekly content and the viewing figures have improved steadily in the last couple of years.

The latest wrap pod featured Mark Jackson and Jay Long and while we altered the format after the defeats in South Africa recently, we managed to stick to the status quo for this one and the lads did an excellent job.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe there too and/or leave a review if you can.

QUICK TAP : FINAL WEEK

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Slightly different update section this week – we harped on a possible matchday 23 in our chat at the end of our wrap pod and it featured in our YouTube video so I have added it here.

URC IRISH SHIELD UPDATE

So Ulster’s win does put them in pole position for the first “proper” Irish Shield (in past seasons although Leinster won it the table was based on ALL results unlike this season which is just on the interpros), but if Leinster can max out a win against the Westies in the final match, Richie Murphy’s men will probably have to win in Thomond Park to lift the trophy.  Not saying they can’t do it but it definitely won’t be easy given the form Munster are in.

KEEN ON SEVENS

I’m adding this story after originally posting as I have just learned of it, apparently Hugo Keenan is to “do a Duponte” and join the Irish 7s squad for the Olympics.

From an Irish fan’s point of view and purely looking at the event itself, this is obviously excellent news and it greatly increases our chances of a medal.

However, overall my views on this are complicated. I can hardly change my opinion when it came to Antoine Duponte’s addition to the French set up. For one thing, this “ringer adding” takes a slot away from a squad member who helped the team qualify in the first place. Plus, much like AD, being with the squad will hurt a XVs team in that it seems Hugo will be unavailable for Leinster’s URC playoff push.

For me this goes against everything that rugby is meant to be. Sevens is great, of that there is no doubt, and I have given both Irish programmes full coverage and support on these pages. And the Olympics is not only a special event in its own right but it also offers a unique opportunity to showcase rugby in general so I get that having some XVs stars in there helps with that.

But still, I’m not a fan of this. For what it’s worth.

MAKING THE BEST LEAGUE EVEN BETTER

Yes, I am totally on board with all the “URC=Best League” hype, I just have a couple of teeny tiny quibbles on the format, do bear with me.

The first has to do with the criteria they use for separating teams level on points at the end of the regular season.

Having “matches won” as the number one tiebreaker is brilliant.  Can’t fault it being there.  I would definitely rank a team who had reached its points total by wins ahead of one that had accumulated bonus points.  HOWEVER – why isn’t “most draws” in second place on this list?  Surely a team with, say, 10 wins an 1 draw has a better record than one with 10 wins and 0 draws, yet if that team with 0 draws has a better PD they’ll get the higher position?  I hope it never becomes decisive between qualifying and not for any team, and I don’t see that happening this season, but I still think it’s a tweak that needs to be made.

Another finicky point I have is with the final round being all derby matches.  Three of the four “Shields” involve 4 teams that are governed by the one union and since the final round can be critical in deciding where the quarterfinals will be staged (remember…these matches are extra revenue-generators), for me anyway we don’t want any nation to be in a position where “producing” a particular result to help bring that QF into their jurisdiction might be possible.  To be clear – I’m not suggesting any union would even consider that, it’s just ideally we’d like to avoid making it possible and cross-shield Round 18 matches would definitely help.

SUPER IDEA?

When it comes to Welsh Rugby, one thing is clear – they HAVE to do something to fix what’s wrong.  And their latest attempt seems to be the formation of a tournament called “Super Rygbi Cymru” to exist between club and regional level, and the reaction of the ever critical ‘Welsh Rugby X’ contingent has been, well, predictable.  I’m not one to judge (although perhaps the “Super” branding might be a stretch?) and all I can say is that I really hope it achieves its goals, which I would have thought was mending fences between clubs, regions and WRU while at the same time raising the standard for the prospects making their way to the top.  Thing is though…all involved HAVE to give it time, as in MORE than one full season and I’m not sure all involved, including the media, can do that.

JIMMY G 500

Given his time at Leinster was during the Matt O’Connor era, one Leinster fans are keen to forget, this news may have missed a lot of fans but I for one can’t help but see his 500th appearance as an amazing achievement for any rugby professional.  Besides, if a drop goal against Toulon had gone the other side of the post (and to this day I’m STILL not 100% sure it didn’t) then we may be having completely different conversations about Leinster’s history today.

SIMON SAYS ENOUGH

“For almost fifteen years Simon Zebo has been the embodiment of all this is good in Munster Rugby. That’s why he will be missed.”The Z Factor by Caolan Scully

I never had a problem with Simon Zebo and there has been no doubting his talent. But going by his social media offerings he has always had a problem with Leinster. To be fair, I reckon he’s taken a lot of shite coming in the other direction but so do a lot of public figures. Anyway – I do wish him all the best for his future but when it comes to offering a full reaction following his retirement announcement I reckon it’s best to hand it over to a Munster fan, in this case Caolán Scully.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

Toulouse, even depleted, won in round 24 to remained top while condemning Montpellier to a relegation playoff, and Stade F outlasted Bordeaux to put them on the brink of a guaranteed semifinal slot.  ROG’s La Rochelle always seem to get a win just at the right time to keep them in the top 6 although their Round 25 trip to Toulouse won’t be easy whatever happens in London the week before.

PREMIERSHIP UPDATE

Looking at Northampton and Gloucester’s results this week you wouldn’t be sure which of them won 90-0 the previous weekend but both were virtually guaranteed their final positions, although the more Bath increased their lead the more that could have changed.  We are now left with two very intriguing semifinals…the smart money would be a repeat of Bath/Saints in the final but you’d rule out Sale & Sarries at your peril.

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC UPDATE

The way Crusaders fell to their latest defeat, seen in x clip below,  might be described as “bad luck” but given their overall campaign so far I’m not so sure.  And their schedule doesn’t get any easier with the league leading Blues coming to town next weekend.  Meanwhile the Hurricanes jumped into a 19-0 lead over Moana P only to be pegged back to an 8-point victory, providing a perfect example as to why the “score 3+ tries more than your opposition” is a much better way to earn a BP than “simply scoring 4 tries”.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

I forgot to mention this last week, probably because I was so embarrassed I tried to scrub it from my memory…every Friday I send a WhatsApp reminder to everyone in the HPL so they remember to make their SuperBru predictions, only in the last round, I proceeded to forget myself to do the two URC matches on that Friday evening.  O, the slagging I got, and of course, it continued the following Friday.  Obviously that didn’t do my chances of moving back up the league any good and as you can see, it still looks like a two-horse race between Kino and Kristian.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

All that’s left now is Final Week.  We plan to have Keego AND Kino on our preview show this Friday, as well as some special pre-final offerings from all of our contributors, then we’re going to leave the wrap pod recording until the Monday night as Tom will be travelling back from London to give a full report on the atmosphere and such.  Hopefully we won’t mind the wait for the right reasons…

And as ever, be sure to enjoy your rugby wherever you are.  JLP

FRONT FIVE

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

Murphy will be without five of the starters from that game at the RDS.

Ulster’s Henderson and Hume to miss rest of season

BBC.co.uk

JLP : Some good, bad and extremely ugly news for Ulster during the week…obviously Richie Murphy being made permanent coach is a positive step in the right direction for all involved but for that to be followed up by such devastating injury news really has to hurt (and trust me I take no pleasure in typing any of that) making their task all the more difficult at the weekend.  I still reckon it would be very unwise to underestimate them in the Kingspan, of course…

I’m not convinced that this package is anywhere near as robust as it should be.

Let’s stop the law tinkering – safety issues apart

Owen Doyle – Irish Times

JLP : World Rugby announced a rake of law tweaks and trials last week.  Safe to say there is a lot to unpack but most of the attention seems to be going to the taking away of the scrum as an option for a free kick and, as ever, that 20-minute red card.  For the former, I see the desire to cut the time down but I reckon it would be better to try and speed up the set piece itself rather than limit the amount of times they set.  My suggestion is an extra official in the TMO box, ideally a retired pro front rower.  On the 20 minute red, well, I have harped several times on this, no point harpin any more, it’s madness to my eyes yet seemingly essential to the southern hemisphere so we are where we are.

Building a sustainable post-rugby career involves more than just the skills acquired on the field

Navigating Career Paths: The Transition Journey for Rugby Union Players

Joe Sheppard – RuckThis.ie

JLP : We recently introduced you to the RuckThis site and here’s a good article penned by Joe ‘Big Joe Shep’ Sheppard, it does exactly what it says on the tin/in the headline.

The reason given for the persistent delays was issues with licensing and player likenesses

‘Rugby 24’ Developers Give Insight Into Delays To Game Release

Eoin Harrington – Balls.ie

JLP : I’m not at all a gamer, though not because it’s not right up my alley (I can assure you 15 year old me is furious about this) it’s more that I just don’t have the time necessary to become halfway decent at any of the amazing sophisticated offerings out there today.  But I have to say I’m fascinated by the ongoing saga over the production of a rugby simulation.  Since the heyday of Rugby 08 and Jonah Lomu nobody seems to have come close to offering an alternative to compare.  How much of the failure is due to an inability to get the graphics etc just right and how much is down to inability to secure the rights to all the players from all the teams in all the leagues remains to be seen I guess, but while it would obviously never reach the heights and sales of something like Madden or FIFA/FC, you’d think there would be enough of a demand to warrant at least a new version every couple of years.

***CLICKBAIT OF THE WEEK AWARD***

“We were punished by players who have crucial responsibilities in this team.  I will not give names.”

The shocking rugby howler that’s left Ronan O’Gara livid

Dylan James – WalesOnline

JLP : Not all my clickbait awards will necessarily be for bad reasons, sometimes the headline needs that extra bit of spice to catch your eye. I mean…it is true that Aldritt’s howler was worthy enough of attention all on it’s own given who he is but adding in the reaction of his coach gives the story that extra, eh, je ne sais quoi?

WRAP OF A WRAP

Had a late withdrawal (matron!) from the pod on Sunday evening so it would have been unfair to ask someone to prepare to review half the Ospreys match but thankfully Ciarán Duffy agreed to join the second half of the recording while I took over responsibility for reviewing the 2nd & 4th quarters.  If I do say myself I thought it went pretty well, in fact I might do the reviewing duties again for the Ulster match next weekend.  Anyway, like I said Ciarán joined us to restore the triumvirate for our YouTube recording which involved final thoughts from the match plus a couple of other topics like Leinster’s 10 and a possible selection for Belfast…

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe there too and/or leave a review if you can.

QUICK TAP : CRICKET SCORES

The European rugby calendar issue has been without doubt my biggest bugbear over the 15+ years of the existence of Harpin On Rugby.  It really annoys me how coaches are forced to pick and choose between two competitions in their selections week to week, and you could say Leinster have suffered from this more than most as we are consistently heavily involved on two fronts going into every month of May.  Anyway – Northampton’s big win over Gloucester gave me my latest excuse to harp on this as you can see in this week’s Quick Tap.

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Hopefully Alex Soroka will forgive me for saying that this has been the best “No Further Update” portion of this segment in a long, long time!  May he too return to fitness before too long, but with big knockout games on the horizon no squad would have too much complaints about seeing the likes of Hugo Keenan, Garry Ringrose and James Ryan get closer to some game time.  I have a feeling we won’t see Ringer for until the URC playoffs at earliest so I’ve tried to make my selection show the best balance between the rights amount of cotton wool, getting some rugby into the legs of the returnees and keeping some of the London starters active.

Harpin’ matchday 23 v Ospreys

Healy, Kelleher, Ala’alatoa, Molony (c), Jenkins, Connors, Penny, Deegan

NB : the above matchday 23s are completely from my own mind, I’m certainly not suggesting I have any ITK a la Thornley

THANK YOU LOCKY

When I was putting together my suggested Leinster matchday 23 for Belfast at the weekend, I struggled a bit for a 13 since Liam Turner is injured and both Osborne & Henshaw could do with at least a half match break.  I settled on Tommy O’Brien as he has played there before but had he remained at Leinster another fine option would have been Rory O’Loughlin, in fact one of many fine moments he produced for Leinster was a try against Ulster, scored in a New Year’s fixture at the RDS when we actually won!

Sad to hear of his forced retirement, we of course wish him all the best in the future.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

I said it last week – by rights Toulouse’s convincing win over Stade Français to put them on top of the league SHOULD be the big result from round 23 but even for this Leinster fan who probably should be keeping tabs on les ‘rouge et noir’, I can’t ignore La Rochelle’s latest defeat, a pretty heavy one away to Bordeaux in a match strewn with errors as has already been pointed out in the Front 5 above.  This leaves them in a precarious position when it comes to reaching the playoffs, and will definitely need a win at home this weekend to Pau who are right below them.  Definitely the match of the round this time though is Stade v Bordeaux, aka 2nd v 3rd, aka two teams coming off losses and vying for a semifinal spot.

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC UPDATE

I managed to watch the top of the table clash between the Blues and the Hurricanes, mostly to mancrush on Jordie Barrett and he did play well but in a thriller of a match it was the Blues defence at the end that got them the win – Canes had a 5m tap n go with the clock counting down and got driven back on the very first play so it put the Auckland based franchise to the summit for now.  For the most part I felt their back row including Papali’i and Akira Ioane gave them the edge.  Meanwhile the Crusader lost AGAIN…that’s just 2 wins in 11 matches and a quarterfinal spot is actually starting to look very unlikely although I wouldn’t rule them out until it was mathematically possible.  A win in Canberra in the next round certainly wouldn’t hurt.  Blues have another home NZ derby while the Canes will hope to get back to winning ways in hosting Moana P.

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

“…probably 12 out of the 23 when I shook the hands told me, ‘See you guys in the final’.”

South Africa Star Reveals ‘Arrogant’ Comments From Ireland Players After World Cup Meeting

Gary Connaughton – Balls.ie

JLP : Now of course I can see how that looks not only arrogant but also misguided given how the tournament panned out but I’ll still push back a little bit if I may…let’s look at the context here.  The Irish players were allegedly saying this just moments after a classic low scoring battle between two of the world’s top teams.  Any chance the comment might be simply taken at face value as a compliment?  Yes, maybe a touch of arrogance on our part, but also conveying a sense that we believe you guys will also reach the final?  Oh and another thing…Etzebeth is reacting to the Irish side of things but doesn’t see too much wrong in the suggestion that his side would reach the final?  So if that’s so, was it just the Irish players who were arrogant?  I mean – obviously the way things turned out it would have been justified in the Springboks’ case but again we’re talking about how things stood at the time after that one particular match.

Raphael Franks – NZ Herald (via MSN)

JLP : Absolutely tragic story of course, and it should only serve to redouble the efforts the game has made to make the game as safe as possible.  And as @ProgressiveRugby points out below, the language we use for incidents like this can definitely play a factor

the 2024/25 competition will continue its expansion…which will see the six teams play five home and five away fixtures each

Celtic Challenge Returns with Expanded Competition Format

IrishRugby.ie

JLP : I’d always rather defer to the likes of @IrishWomens on these matters and she outlines the pros and cons in these posts.  For my part I’d agree this is mostly a positive development, and they have done well do move slowly with the development of the competition from year to year.  On the clubs issue, I still believe it wasn’t a complete case of failing the clubs in this instance since they had to work with other unions to bring this competition about and the clubs had been calling out for more fixtures, but hopefully with the advance notice the clubs will be able to be prepared on the personnel front.  When it comes to the CC comp itself, I would hope that eventually Ireland will be able to field all four provinces rather than these two contrived franchises but I do appreciate that logistically that will take some doing.

A year ago today, I discovered someone had set up two accounts on X…with the sole intention of abusing and harassing me and my family.

The Tea : My story about online harassment, defamation and sexual harassment

Irish Women’s Rugby Supporters’ Club

JLP : In the slot above you see @IrishWomens doing what she does best, ie put forward a realistic comparison between the status quo in the women’s game in Ireland and how it should be.  Hopefully the public’s reaction to her would be nothing less than full support but as you can tell from this brave article in some quarters it was been anything but.  And it’s not like this one guy is the only one to give her negative mysoginistic feedback either, although obviously his is the worst.  Please have a read and be sure to follow her Substack as well for some excellent isights as to what is happening at all levels of the women’s game.

***CLICKBAIT OF THE WEEK AWARD***

Despite initial doubts surrounding his proposed move to Montpellier, recent reports suggest such concerns have been dispelled.

Update has been given on Billy Vunipola’s proposed move to Montpellier following arrest

Ruck.co.uk

JLP : From now I’ve decided to use this 5th and final slot in my Front5 segment for my Clickbait Of The Week Award, one which I hope no online publication would actually want to win although you wouldn’t be sure.  For obvious reasons I don’t see the need to actually include a link for this one, as my choice of quote has answered the unnecessary question posed by the headline.

WRAP OF A WRAP

It’s important to remember we only started doing the wrap pods at the start of the 2022/23 season, when by the middle of April both Leinster and Ireland had won all of their matches so let’s just say it took a while to get the hang of organising a show around a defeat, and it’s not that we personally do want to harp on those matches it’s more like we’re pretty sure our core listeners don’t want to hear a deep dive into a disaster.  But the shows already go on regardless, albeit with a slightly different format.

This time I was joined by Ciarán Duffy & Jay Long and we quickly went back over the Cape Town catastrophe, before thankfully having something good to harp on when it came to the Irish women’s success in Belfast before looking ahead to the big semifinal at Croke Park.  All in all I reckon the lads did a bang up job.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe there too and/or leave a review if you can.

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Brilliant news of course on Messrs O’Brien & Ringrose but is it worth throwing them in to Leinster’s Champions Cup semifinal squad on their first matches back?  I’m leaning no for both of them, especially if Hugo Keenan is fit to play – if not, then Ringrose could wear 23 but

“SVNS” UPDATE

It’s the final leg of the “regular season” in Singapore this weekend, then the top 8 move on to the playoffs in Madrid at the end of the month.  Ireland seem to be comfortably through in both genders though obviously it won’t hurt to have a decent showing this weekend.  As ever you can watch back all the action via RugbyPass TV even if you miss the kickoffs at unseemly hours.

NO MATCHES LAST WEEKEND

Under the new model, HSBC SVNS 2024 features seven regular season events plus a Grand Final. The top eight placed teams based on cumulative series points at the conclusion of the seventh round in Singapore will secure their opportunity to compete in the new ‘winner takes all’ Grand Final in Madrid, where the women’s and men’s HSBC SVNS 2024 champions will be crowned.

Madrid will also play host to the high stakes relegation play-off competition where teams ranked ninth to 12th will join the top four teams from the World Rugby Sevens Challenger, with the top four placed teams securing their place on HSBC SVNS 2025.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

Standout scoreline has to be Clérmont’s hammering of league leaders Stade Français, even when you allow for the fact that Stade would have one eye on the trip to Toulouse in the next round, it still shows that ASM really seem to be turning things around and might be favourites for the Challenge Cup.  Toulouse for their part both closed the gap at the top and opened one up between them and 3rd as they dispatched Racing while La Rochelle kept themselves in the barrage picture with a win over Toulon, although they’ve Bordeaux away next.  Montpellier’s defeat at home to USAP certainly won’t ease they’re relegation worries.

PREMIERSHIP UPDATE

I don’t see anyone in the English media complaining about Northampton resting their players over the past couple of weeks ahead of their trip to Croker?  Funny that.  Anyway defeat to Quins at Twickenham didn’t knock them off the top although overall the top four slots are still all to play for in the final four rounds with seven still in the hunt, with Exeter v Quins arguably the biggest 10-pointer in the next round.

Not a bad weekend for Munster Rugby all round, province makes it 10 points out of 10 on a RSA swing, then their clubs sweep all the decisive contests with Garryowen earning the right to join St Mary’s in Div 1A in the men’s, Cork Con defying cards of all colours to take Terenure’s AIL men’s crown, while UL Bohs deservedly won the women’s title although again I’ll question the wisdom of having their decider on the same weekend as the Six Nations.

As disastrous a season as Crusaders have been having by their standards, would anyone even consider ruling them out of winning another title, even before their whitewashing of the Rebels?  Meanwhile the Hurricanes fell to their first loss of the season which makes the top of the table interesting for sure given the Blues edged out the Reds in a high scoring Brisbane thriller.

JAPAN LEAGUE ONE UPDATE

Only one round left before the playoffs, and although we know what the top four is going to be, there is an interesting match in Round 16 – if Canon Eagles can manage to beat the 100% Wild Knights they could actually avoid them in the semifinals.  One interesting feature of this league is the fact that as many as three teams get relegated and those positions seem to have been decided with one game to go.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

If I wasn’t too keen on harpin’ on Leinster’s URC outing last weekend, I definitely don’t want to dwell too much on my URC predictions.  Wasn’t too long since I was comfortably in front but as you can see it doesn’t take much to catch up and a wooden spoon in round 15 has knocked me down to 3rd, anxiously looking over my shoulder too.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

Countdown to Croker time here at Harpin’ Manor.  Usual coverage to come, preview on Friday, wrap pod recording Sunday, social media comments throughout.  Do keep in touch and throw in your two cents when you can.

FRONT FIVE

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

It’s believed that Munster and Ulster are showing interest but Leinster are keen to retain Boyle, who they regard as a big prospect

Milne and Boyle set to stay but several Leinster men joining other provinces

Murray Kinsella – The42.ie

JLP : Finally we see some flesh put on the bones of all the rumours that have been rattling around the ruggersphere for the past while – even the most dyed in the wool Leinster fan would have to admit we can’t hold on to all of our talent indefinitely so there are bound to be players moving on.  That said, we should be able to keep the top players we produce ourselves (within reason) and if Milne and Boyle do stay that would be a decent outcome for sure.

“I’m not French, I’m trying to prove myself and put my name into the debate.”

Ireland legend Ronan O’Gara could be the next France boss

Ruck.co.uk

JLP : Is the headline being sensationalist?  Of course it is.  I mean, I ‘could’ also be the next French boss, so could Donald Trump.  But still even with Fabien Galthie seeming to have used up all his 2022 Grand Slam goodwill, I have to admit I never thought too much about ROG getting the job and the more I think of it the more it makes sense, although that may put a certain faction of Munster supporters into something of a quandary when they play Ireland…

Saracens are one of several sides keen to know exactly how many of their squad will be offered deals and precisely how the new system will operate.

English clubs urge RFU to speed up enhanced hybrid contract plans

Robert Kitson – The Guardian

JLP : “Hybrid contracts” you say?  What an interesting concept.  Maybe we could try something like that here in Ireland, though we’d have to change the name otherwise it might look like we were copying the RFU…maybe we could say, “Central” instead?  Funny how they’re looking to introduce just as we’re debating the notion of giving them an overhaul.

Kitshoff only arrived at Ulster in November on what was meant to be a three-year deal

Steven Kitshoff’s season over while James Hume facing long layoff for Ulster

RTÉ.ie

JLP : On the latest wrap pod we mentioned how sometimes these NIQ signings don’t work out, with possible Steven Sykes’ 4-cap stint being among the most memorable for being the least memorable at Leinster.   It’s probably better off for all involved he goes home early but it does leave Ulster with something of a dilemma in his position – and with him now unavailable for the rest of the season, plus James Hume also on the sidelines for now anyway, they just don’t seem to have any luck whatsoever on the personnel front.

The final is scheduled to take place at 2.45pm at the North London venue, and with the FA Cup final set for a 3pm kick-off just 12 miles away at Wembley,

Champions Cup And FA Cup Final Clash Could Spell Chaos For Leinster Fans

James Fenton – Balls.ie

JLP : Another case of the word “could” doing a lot of heavy lifting in a headline, although in this case it’s a good thing because at least it allows for the small matter of a semifinal to take place before it affects Leinster fans.  On the broader subject of the clash, I mean, who could have possibly foreseen that having the two matches in the same city on the same day at practically the same time could cause an issue?  Besides pretty much everybody, of course…

WRAP OF A WRAP

Many thanks as ever to Conor & Rich for helping me with the latest pod, obviously this wasn’t exactly a match we looked forward to wrapping and I assumed not many regular listeners would be took keen to hear us harp on it so we cut back the actual wrap time and looked forward to the URC’s remaining rounds as well.

I put that run-in segment on the YouTube channel, which has been doing pretty well  on the numbers front I have to say – we recently passed 300 subscribers and the vids are starting to regularly hit 1000 views which may not be much for the more seasoned channels but considering it’s not our primary platform, isn’t too bad and here at Harpin Towers we’re happy enough (for now – don’t let that stop you subscribing and viewing yourself if you haven’t already!!!)

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe there too and/or leave a review if you can.

QUICK TAP : NEXT-LEVEL REF-SHAMING

At the end of my latest Quick Tap vid I promise to explain in more detail my reasons for my personal decisions on those tries so here goes…

I’m actually going to do the second one first because it’s a lot easier…I see it as a knock on, simple as.  Just because we see it go the other direction in the video doesn’t mean Carré didn’t knock it on first, and I reckon he did.  Call me biased because it favours the Irish team all you want, this is how I saw it.

As for the Izuchukwu tackle it’s way tricker.  Amazing try saving tackle?  Definitely.  Does he mean to kick it?  For me, no, and here is where most of the disagreement seems to be, but I see it as a natural motion that resulted from his trying to pull the Cardiff player back.  HOWEVER because that area of intent is so subjective I reckon it brings our decision to an almost perfect 50/50 call.  That my seem like a cop out but I actually believe that in all sports whenever you’re not sure which way to lean it should always be in the direction that awards the score, like in baseball where they have the phrase “tie goes to the runner” – that’s not an official rule, but IMO it’s a good overall principle for officials.

Told you it was complicated!!!  Any many of these rulings are, which is exactly why we should debate them without making it personal about the officials.

WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS

Not much I can add to my tweet after the full time whistle blew at Twickers although apart from the online morons who probably have never seen a game of women’s rugby yet still see fit to chime in with things like “they just have to play better”, the consensus opinion seems to be that the other unions need to find a way to bring their standards much closer to those of England and France otherwise these scorelines will continue.  Brian Moore had a good article (behind paywall) about this as did Sarah Rendell in Rugby World. It took the URC a while to feature the latest Shield tables on their website but better late than never.  That one-point win for Ulster at the RDS has left the race wide open with it very possible that it could boil down to their trip to Thomond Park on the final day of the regular season.

Let’s be honest – all Leinster eyes are on Northampton now, and although they rested a few regulars they still put their auld enemy Leicester away pretty handily.  Interesting how they face their fellow Prem CC-semifinalist Quins in the next round, although the home side need the points a lot more so I wouldn’t read too much into a lopsided score there.

AIL UPDATE

Up until today Wednesday I found it extremely difficult to get any information on the time and date of the Women’s AIL final.  In fact, I have been following the league all season and it wasn’t until the round robin was over that I even knew there wasn’t a top four playoff!  Just the top 2 straight into the final it seems, with UL Bohs facing off against Railway Union in the decider this Sunday, a unique double- header with Terenure and Cork Con squaring off for the men’s crown.  And if that’s not enough consequential Leinster v Munster battles for you, then how about Garryowen v Old Belvedere for the right to join St Mary’s in Division 1A next season?  Lot’s of good club rugby this weekend.

The Crusaders fell yet again so we’re way past calling this a blip as they sit rock bottom of the standings.  So I guess from here until the end of the season it makes more sense for this Leinster fan to be focusing more on the Hurricanes at the top of the table!  Especially with Jordie Barrett in top form chipping in with a try and a conversion in their latest win.  Tricky visit to Canberra for them next, might be worth a watch.

JAPAN LEAGUE ONE UPDATE

About time I featured League One in this column – obviously with the “Leinster-centric-ness” of my general harpin’ I don’t have a lot of time to follow this league although I am fascinated by it in many ways.  A lot of money has gone it to attract some really big names and it seems in some places it really, really works while in others, well, it really really doesn’t.

Take the match in Round 14 between Toyota Verblits, who had a 7-8-9-10 combo of Himeno, PSDT, A Smith & B Barrett, and Saitama Wild Knights, who have Lood de Jager and Damien de Allende among the recognisable names.  Without looking at the league table you certainly wouldn’t imagine a 40-7 scoreline in favour of the visitors would you?  The top 4 seems pretty much set with two rounds to go although there is an interesting 2nd v 3rd battle this weekend.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

As usual I got a bit cocky as I regained top spot in the HPL after Friday’s results and bragged about it in the WhatsApp group only to see Kino come storming back on the Saturday to actually increase his overall lead at the top from the previous round.  I certainly can’t afford to let him get too far ahead.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

Stormers up next for Leinster, usual preview on Friday, plus don’t forget our rugby slot on Dubin South 93.9FM after the 5 o’clock news then we’ll have our wrap pod on Sunday evening.  Please be sure to follow, comments, like, share and subscribe as much as you can across our social media platforms.

And as ever, be sure to enjoy your rugby wherever you are.  JLP

FRONT FIVE

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

…the IRFU are undertaking a review of their contractual system, which will be completed before Humphreys takes over from Nucifora.

Blue bloods: IRFU ‘national’ contract system will continue to load the dice in Leinster’s favour

Gerry Thornley – Irish Times

JLP : Massive news dump in Leinster/Ireland news since the weekend, so much so that two stories broke after our “emergency pod” you’ll see further down the column.  Part of me thinks making all those announcements together was a bad idea from a PR standpoint, especially days after a weekend where Leinster became the only team left in European competition.  But then again the whole idea of a “news dump” is to concentrate all the supposedly negative info into one news cycle so maybe this is what happened, we’ll never know for sure.

On the subject of central contracts, of course 10 for Leinster and just 1 each for the other three provinces is not the best look.  But would making it an even 3 each or something like that be an answer based on where the talent is?

All I’m saying is that it’s not straight-forward.  Yes, it’s part of the IRFU’s remit to oversee rugby in all four provinces, but when it comes to central contracts we have to remember what they are for, namely keeping our best players within the Irish system.  I can’t see a way of building a need for parity across the provinces into the process, especially when we have absolutely no control over the offers coming in from abroad.   Maybe as long as they are coming in for Leinster players, they are the ones we should be looking to hold onto for now.  Plus, as I say on the emergency pod, it’s not like the test team is doing badly, World Cup QF aside.

Obviously none of that means I think the system is perfect, it’s just who else is going to push back on the over-simplistic “Leinster get everything while the other provinces get nothing” narrative we hear.  There are areas where the ratios should be closer to 1 for 1 across the provinces.  But there are others where they can’t help but be skewed more towards the balance of the so-called “demographic” differences.  And finding the right levels is never going to be easy.

It seems to be a majority opinion that David Nucifora’s tenure as the puppet-master across the sport in Ireland was one which failed to find those correct levels, particularly when you factor in the women’s game (also club level for both genders) into the equation.  If there is any “mitigation” it could be that it was a job that nobody had ever tried before, although it’s not like he didn’t have enough time to fix any errors as he went along.

Our only hope is that his successor David Humphreys can learn from those mistakes and find approaches that at least come a bit closer to pleasing everyone in the game here.  I feel like there’s an opportunity that comes with this changing of the guard, one that if done the right way can build on the many successes the men have achieved to make it a sport for absolutely everyone, a trick I always felt was tragically missed by the FAI after the accomplishments of the Irish teams in the early 90s.

Since retiring, the former New Zealand Under-20 captain has been part of the…coaching team…(of) The Hurricanes (who) are currently first on the Super Rugby table…

Another Kiwi joins Leinster set-up

Rugby365.com

JLP : Another announcement that missed the cut for our extra pod – as much as we’ll miss Andrew Goodman there’s definitely no harm getting someone over from the brains trust of the top team in Super Rugby right now.

To date the leagues have not agreed to EPCR’s request but there remains hope that change could still be introduced next season

Champions Cup overhaul planned after damaging defeat of weakened Bulls

Gerard Meagher – The Guardian

JLP : We can’t have a Champions Cup weekend come and go without more talk about formats, which is fair enough but like I always say, if the league can agree on going back to two more weeks for the pool stages that might be an improvement on what we have at the moment, but for me it definitely won’t fix the tournament’s biggest problem, namely that the matches are peppered out throughout the season forcing coaches to prioritise between playing in this year’s comp and qualifying for next year’s, which will always lead to selection like Jake White’s last weekend.

The Irish Rugby Football Union has elected to use the funds to host additional women’s U18 and U20 camps and training matches to accelerate player development

Women’s Lions sponsors will provide funding to avoid imbalance

The Rugby Paper

JLP : We often harp on negative things to do with women’s rugby so I suppose it’s only fair to mention good news, obviously we’ll have to see if this investment is sufficient to increase our player pool but at least it is good to see that money generated from a women’s team is going directly to the lower levels, with the caveat that there is much more still to be done of course, especially with the clubs.

“It is not to cast aspersions on anyone, but the last time they played an away game, their boots had wooden studs.”

Stephen Jones Incandescent Over Leinster Hosting Semifinal at Croke Park

Joshua Bell Curran – Balls.ie

JLP : Ireland is small and doesn’t have a lot of big stadia.  If we can sell out the Aviva Stadium and that’s not available for a given weekend, then we have to look at Croker.  It’s as simple as that, and what’s sad about this is that SJ knows this full well, he’s just feeding into that ridiculous and inaccurate “neutral venue” spiel that’s going around.

But looking at this article another way, if Leinster/Ireland success is somehow making him “incandescent”, then I take that as more success.

WRAP OF A WRAP

Normally I try to keep the wrap pods under an hour but for this match/performance I reckon it was ok to make an exception.  Tom & Mark earned the right to be the guests as they bravely stepped up to the plate after that Final Of Which We Much Never Speak last May, and they did their usual bang up job.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe and/or leave a review if you can.

For a taste of the pod here’s a YouTube clip featuring their analysis of the “championship minutes” from the match.

QUICK TAP “EMERGENCY POD”

Normally I do a “Quick Tap”, aka a solo TikTok video, for this column but at the request of Keego and Kino, I instead set up an “emergency pod” recording on Tuesday to try and go over all the news that broke on the Monday…the Ross Molony news broke after I had set the whole thing up but still made the cut, while the Bleyendaal, JGP & Bank of Ireland sponsorship didn’t but I’ll touch on them in this column.  BTW I know we already did a full pod on the La Rochelle win but we hadn’t heard from these two yet so let’s just say we didn’t mind going over it once last time…

Topics were

  1. La Rochelle win
  2. Croke Park
  3. Dan Sheehan
  4. Jodie Barrett
  5. Ross Molony
  6. Demographics?

I also put out a sample from the pod on YouTube, covering topics 3, 4 & 5…

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Always tricky trying to anticipate who we plan to send to South Africa but I had a stab at Saturday’s 23 anyway.  I reckon whether Ross B will be available to play against  Northampton or not we should probably bring Harry anyway for some game time but as ever I should point out it’s with good reason that it’s not my decision to make!!!

WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS

Here’s what I said on the wrap pod…

“…the incredible Irish women who recorded their first Six Nations win in two years with a convincing 36-5 victory over Wales at Musgrave park with tries from Higgins, Parsons, Jones, Corrigan & player of the match Aoife Wafer.  The victory has actually moved Ireland up to 3rd on the table and although that could change after facing the all conquering English Red Roses next, we can definitely look at our final match against Scotland in Belfast with more confidence.  Any for now, many congrats to all involved.”

Obviously the task against England is daunting to say the very, very least but what this convincing win over Wales has done is give us the confidence to look beyond to that final match with Scotland and the way the fixtures play out, 4th spot or possibly even 3rd are within our grasp which is an amazing position to be in.

THE LAZY ABL NARRATIVE

I really don’t like harpin’ on this too much but still I have to give a hat-tip to contributor Kristian Ross for bringing this TikTok to my attention.  I have spoken and written much bout what I call the ABL narrative and it has been trotted out much over the past couple of days in written social media posts, but this….well, if this guy was looking to audition to be the face and voice of ABL then congrats mate, you have it.

Putting aside the neutral venue misinformation I already mentioned further up the article wrt Stephen Jones, I never thought it would be humanly possible to fit more worn out tropes into one clip, but these lads managed it, including going to that picture of two “typical Leinster fans” which has to be at least 10 years old by now.  For obvious reasons I won’t embed the thing on this page but if you want to check it out it’s here.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

Only two French teams left in Europe, Toulouse who have to be well placed for a double and Clérmont, who I thought might be more focused on their relegation battle but instead put Ulster to the sword at the Michelin.  Toulon v Toulouse looks like the pick of the bunch although it will be interesting to see how La Rochelle pick themselves up again as they must travel to Castres.

I also must hold my hand up and say I got a fact wrong the preview pod & radio slot, I was sure Clérmont played La Rochelle in this round, and, well, they’re not.  Apologies.

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC UPDATE

Last week I pointed out that Tahs v Saders would be the match of the round, and boy I wasn’t wrong.  Apparently the lead changed hands a dozen times and a last minute penalty put it into “golden point” extra time with Will Harrison nailing the game-winning drop goal to keep the Crusaders in danger of missing the playoffs, surely the unthinkable.  They go to Perth next, with the unbeaten Hurricanes playing the Drua.  Kudos to Moana btw for their 3rd win of the season (could be wrong but I don’t think they’ve done that before), this one over the Reds.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

Hopefully that’s the last I’ll have to harp on the ABL narrative for a while although I may have to stay off social media to make sure, anyway, the SA tour is next on our radar with the Lions up for Leinster next in Jo’burg.   Don’t forget our slot after the 5 o’clock news on Dublin South 93.9 radio this Friday, we’ll also post our own preview that afternoon with a wrap pod to come on Sunday.

FRONT FIVE

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

“Jacques [Nienaber] is mainly a defensive mastermind and he has brought in a completely different defensive system and it is working. I can understand why South Africa were so successful under him.”

James Lowe: ‘The only way you measure a season is trophies’

Johnny Watterson – Irish Times

JLP : Going by the few interviews I’ve seen with Lowe over the years, it seems like he talks like he plays, to say “he doesn’t understate things” would itself be an understatement.  But while the goals outlined his quote which is the title of the piece are yet to be fulfilled, the quote I chose speaks to the effect Neinaber has had on the Leinster set up.  When a quality coach joins an already quality organisation, it’s not about reinvention, rather refining, and not only have we seen results on the pitch, it sounds like the lads have bought into his ways off it too.  Obviously this will get tested even more as we go deeper into the business end of the season.

According to a  report over the weekend from Afrikaans newspaper Rapport, Kitshoff met up with Stormers coach John Dobson about a potential return.

Two-Time World Cup Winner Ready To Leave Ulster After One Season

Jonathan Browne – Balls.ie

JLP : Always need a pinch of salt with this kind of story, but this certainly wouldn’t surprise me if true, although not for the reasons you might think.  Many speculators are linking it with all that has been going on at Ulster Rugby, and it’s true that the Ravenhill garden has been close to rosy this season (bar one at the RDS on New Year’s Day of course, obvs I don’t like bringing it up but I know any Ulster fans reading are thinking it ha ha)  but I’m not 100% sure it only has to do with his current environment.  Moving can have a profound affect on people if it’s just up the road let alone across hemispheres.  Many NIQ signings haven’t worked out, to Leinster fans I’d say “remember Steven Sykes?” only I’d wonder if they all actually would.  Hey, maybe it’s just a Steven thing.  Anyway – if SK does move on they’re going to need a decent loose head option so it would be interesting to see what happens next.

Herbst was penalized and sent to the sin bin during the 63rd minute…he reentered the game after only seven minutes

RFU apologises for sin-bin error in Premiership game between Harlequins and Bath

Matthew Wood – Talking Rugby Union

JLP : Look – mistakes happen.  Ones like this absolutely shouldn’t, but they do.  It’s just as a Leinster fan, it’s interesting to see that even 15 years after #bloodgate Harlequins are still going onto the pitch when they shouldn’t… 😜

He didn’t want to be that guy who tarnished his reputation by playing too long

Sam Whitelock retiring instead of shock All Blacks comeback is the right decision

Gregor Paul – NZ Herald

JLP : Paul makes all the right points here; all the greats need to acknowledge when it’s time to step away from the highest level.  What led me to include this story was the stat outlined in the tweet below…Russ Petty’s number-crunching offerings justify my continuing to endure the Musk-infested platform all on their own!

…maybe (he will have to) change his body type slightly so that he could then be ready to the physical challenges of playing American football.

NFL boss reveals how Louis Rees-Zammit ‘aced’ Kansas City Chiefs visit and why new rule is game-changing for him

Dylan James – WalesOnline

JLP : I would love to have the time to live my life, follow rugby enough to  run this site AND follow other codes like the NFL as closely but that’s never going to happen.  That’s not going to stop me opining on them though!!!!  While I would hope that the positive reports on LRZ’s efforts are genuine, I can’t help but be sceptical that this is a pudding that still needs to be proven, for two reasons.  First, signing with a franchise does not guarantee that you will actually take to the field when the season rolls around in September, even if it is the reigning champions.  Plus, I have to wonder about the way the league has made such a big deal about this “international player pathway”.  Why so keen to get players in from abroad?  Are participation levels dwindling at home?  With 32 professional rosters not to mention hundreds of college level ones to fill, could it be that the concussion element has had an effect on those taking up the sport?  Hey, I’m a blogger, crackpot conspiracies are kinda my thing, but I wonder how crackpot this one is.  Anyway, I wish LRZ all the best, although I was surprised to see the Chiefs list him as a running back, he will certainly need to work on his physique for that role.

WRAP OF A WRAP

Completely new experience for me when it came to the wrap – I actually got to watch the match sitting next to one of my guests with Nathan Johns beside me in the media box…obvs with him working and all we didn’t chat much (though since I forgot my headphones I may have bent his ear more than I should have done, sorry mate!).

He and Conor did a great job going back over the match, and a special mention to Harry Murphy of Sportsfile for the snap below which does a brilliant job of capturing the RDS experience for Leinster fans.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe and/or leave a review if you can.

THE LUKE MCGRATH CHALLENGE

Midterm break means kids are off which in turn means I don’t have time for a Quick Tap video this week, instead I’ll share this clip from the wrap pod where we discussed at length Luke McGrath’s challenge on Kurt-Lee Arendse.  Obvs we don’t want to dwell TOO much on these things because it might put too much attention on one player and it goes without saying Luke himself is a major part of Leinster’s plans,

but we also must not forget the overall issue of player safety and the need to properly sanction these situations.  On top of that is the whole assumption that because we’re a Leinster-centric pod then we’d rather ignore it so I reckon this bit of harpin’ dispels that myth pretty well.

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Good news this week in that the “Unavailable for selection” portion of the update seems a hell of a lot lighter, but the heavy “further assessment required” section means it’s nigh on impossible to forecast a Leinster 23 for the Champions Cup knockouts…as you can see I have gone for the two extremes, one where any or all of those players are available (although I’m thinking neither Ringrose and Ngatai will make it whatever happens) and another (tactfully avoiding the word “worst”) where none of them are.

WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS

Very frustrating watching Ireland on Sunday, they did so well right at the start and right at the end but the bits in between needed a lot of work.  I still firmly believe it was absolutely the right thing to take the likes of Eve Higgins and Beibhinn Parsons, but at the RDS the team did have the look of one that has had players parachuted in and it might take time for them to gel to the standards required for the Six Nations.  Maybe if they were together for the WXV as well the team would be better set, but look, we are where we are and now it’s imperative that we get ourselves ready for the Welsh in Cork on Apr 13, because with the Scots doing well and England being England, the schedule certainly does not get much easier from there.

Anyway like I always say you should probably take any analysis of mine on this with a pinch of salt so here’s a good thread on Ireland’s chances from friend of the pod @IrishWomens…

WHO’S THE FOOL?

Another April 1st has been and gone and the multitudes of Fake News articles thankfully has too.  As one who loves to kid around, you’d think I’d be all in favour of this practice but I’m actually the exact opposite, pretty boring at this stage if I’m honest…rather than have them all concentrated on one day I’d much rather have these scattered throughout the year; I did like most of the East Terrace stuff.

I’m also ashamed to say I DID fall for one tweet, by regular commenter and Leinster fan Cian Ormond (although this doesn’t fall into the boring category because I meant from content-creators rather than individuals)…

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

Starting with the bottom of the table this week, Oyonnax look pretty much doomed and I have to say it’s starting to look worrying for Montpellier although they could well pick themselves up for a one game playoff if required.  Back at the business end, Stade Français and Toulouse both won by 2 to stay top while Stu Lancaster & ROG stayed in the barrage picture although with 6 rounds still to go you could say everyone down to 10th is in with a shout.  I’m going to go for Castres v La Rochelle as the pick of the next round although much will depend on their respective involvement in Europe at that stage.

70% of the Premiership clubs have won 8 and lost 6 of their matches so far this season.  Might need a moment to let that sink in…but we still need to be clear that however well their 7th and 8th placed teams may be doing, it’s still not exactly fair that they should gain entry into the Champions Cup when it’s so much more difficult to qualify from the URC and 🔝🐱🐴 .  And I’m only pointing this out because it was the Premiership clubs/English media that was always pointing out European qualification injustice in the past.  Anyway…Northampton remain top of the pile with a decent home win over Sarries not the worst preparation for the visit of Munster.

AIL UPDATE

If I were a betting man I’d say the Women’s AIL final would likely be between Railway Union and UL Bohs and guess who play each other next in the regular season?  Should be a fascinating encounter and might be the best chance of halting Bohs’ unbeaten run.

In the men, champions Terenure finally put their shaky start to the campaign behind them by reaching the summit after a convincing 29-15 win over Tarf at Lakelands with Leinster caps like John McKee and Aitzol King among the try scorers.

But while the top 4 teams are now set, the home semifinals are far from certain.  Despite being in pole position, Nure will find their final match at Hinch anything but easy and should they slip up, both Cork Con and Tarf are ready to overtake them should they overcome Armagh and Trinity respectively.  Although Dublin Univ face the drop to 1B they did have some glory with victory in the colours match over UCD, who had another Leinster player among their try scorers in Conor O’Tighearnaigh.

One last thing about Div 1A…while Trinners are down, the team finishing 9th must survive a playoff to avoid the drop and it is now a straight fight between City of Armagh (who host Cork Con) and Shannon (who go to Belfield Bowl) with the Ulster side having the points diff advantage should they remain level, although you could argue than maybe wins should be the first tiebreaker in which case Shannon would have the edge.

Then on the other end of that playoff, Old Wesley picked up a LBP at already-promoted St Mary’s to keep them in pole position but should they slip up at home to Queens in the final round, Garryowen and Highfield face each other with the winner likely to jump into 2nd.  Still much to play for in that second tier.

Crusaders are finally off the mark, putting away the Chiefs handily enough on home soil but they still very much need a bye week to regroup for the remainder of the campaign and the schedule has obliged.  The Hurricanes stay top after a big win in Otago with the Blues and Brumbies hot in pursuit.  Unfortunately none of the Round 7 ties really jump out at you.

CHALLENGE CUP UPDATE

Time to return to having this update in the column especially with two provinces involved and both having 🔝🐱🐴 away dates.  If I had to say either assignment was “the easier” I’d have to say it was Ulster’s since Montpellier will most definitely be much more focused on their domestic situation (see update above) while despite Pau being in the playoff picture they might see this comp as a realistic chance of silverware.  Quite an interesting draw this when you study it closely.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

Although my actual performance this week was an improvement on the last round, I still gave up my long-standing 1st place status after Kino’s stats-based approach finally got the better of me in real “tortoise over hare” fashion although there is of course still quite a way to go and nobody can be ruled out of contention.  Well, when I say “nobody”, I mean of course nobody except ‘No Picks Keego’…

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

Champions Cup is next, hopefully for both of the next two weeks when it comes to Leinster but first we must of course focus on the visit of the Tigers to the Aviva Stadium.  We’ll have our usual preview on Friday as well as our usual pod recording Sunday eve, and naturally we’ll continue to post our regular amount of content across all the different platforms.

As ever, be sure to enjoy your rugby wherever you are.  JLP

Larmour expressed his eagerness to compete in front of a sold-out crowd and emphasised the special ambiance created by passionate fans.

Jordan Larmour Hails Willie le Roux Ahead of Leinster vs. Bulls Top-of-the-Table Clash

Joe Naughton – SportsNewsIreland

JLP : SNI was the first non-Harpin site I ever wrote for back in the day so I like to check in, here we have one from many articles that suggest it will be Jordan Larmour who will fill the gap at 15 left by the absence of Messrs Keenan & Frawley.  More on this in the injury update further down the column.

Following the departure of Jonny Petrie earlier this week, Hugh will commence his role with the province on Wednesday 3rd of April

Ulster Rugby Announce Hugh McCaughey As Interim CEO

IrishRugby.ie

JLP : All change at the Kingspan and it is good to see it happening at the very top not just coaching level.  It has been clear for a while that moves needed to be made higher up the chain.  Certainly hasn’t been the easiest for them to start the new era on a South African tour but hopefully there will be enough understanding from the fans that it will take time to turn things around.

Raynal made a remarkably bold decision in a 2022 Bledisloe Cup match…in the fallout, Raynal deleted his social media to protect his family from abuse.

Referee Mathieu Raynal retiring after July international rugby window

NZ Herald (via AP)

JLP : Sorry to hear, I never had an issue with him and while I’ve never seen an All Black defeat I didn’t like, I still 100% backed his decision to call that free kick the game needed it especially in such a high profile match although you don’t need to justify pushing back against any form of online abuse towards anyone involved in the sport.

EPCR announce Round of 16 match officials

JLP : Very important site this, you’d understand why there’s no ‘official’ source representative the POV of officials but this independent one has always been reliable.  This is just a straightforward article listing the officiating teams for the last 16 but I pretty much visit this site every week so I thought I’d share it here.

Footage Emerges Of Rassie Erasmus’ Furious Expletive-Ridden World Cup Team Talk

JLP : My feelings on Rassie are mixed – of course you have to respect the whole “two World Cups” part but the Lions tour shenanigans did leave a sour taste.  I always appreciate these behind the scenes bits, looking forward to watching CTS2.

WRAP OF A WRAP

We recorded on Monday this week and aimed to keep the wrap part as brief as possible.  Tom & Ciarán did a bang up job with this as well as looking ahead to the matches Leinster have coming up.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe and/or leave a review if you can.

QUICK TAP : PROMOTING INCLUSION

NGL when I started writing this copy I wasn’t sure where I was headed with it but it became apparent as I went along.  The promotion argument has gone on for long enough and it’s about time we started coming up with viable solutions.  Obviously the option I suggest in the video is a more long term one, I guess I was being realistic about the length of time it takes this sport to make any kind of change.  There are of course many different options that would be fine, the important thing is that they do something soon.

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

While Hugo Keenan & Jimmy O’Brien were in the dreaded “no further update” section, there actually followed a further update that both could return to action sooner than expected, which is definitely good news at this stage of the season.

Strange Jason Jenkins wasn’t included in the update but anyway I’m assuming he’ll be available for Friday where I may be a mile off with my selection but you have to admit that would not only be a form starting XV but it would also possibly be the most talented bench the RDS has ever seen…

WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS

Here’s what I read on the pod…

In the Women’s Six Nations Ireland may have fallen in their opening match in France but there were still loads of positives to take from it, first the 21 point deficit was a vast improvement on the 50 from the same fixture last season, plus we showed we could get scores ourselves with two Aoifes crossing, namely Wafer and Dalton.  Also despite the scoreline it was still a strong defensive display overall from the girls so plenty to feel good about looking ahead to next week’s task against Italy, who were playing at the same Stadio di Lanfranchi where Leinster had won the night before.  Although the Red Roses shipped an early red card for Sarah Beckett, they were still way too good for their hosts and ran out convincing 48-0 winners.  So hopefully there will be a full crowd at the RDS next Saturday to cheer on the girls. That really should be a fascinating encounter.

One extra point I’d like to make is that I really thought it was strange that the Red Roses’ opener against Italy was played at exactly the same time as Bath v Sale Sharks in the men’s Premiership.  Whatever about the complexities of broadcasting contracts and what-not, that’s a terrible look for the sport overall and women’s rugby in particular.  Those fans in The Rec should have been afforded the opportunity to watch their national team play as it happened, even if they weren’t the reigning champions.

“SVNS” UPDATE

The series doesn’t return until the weekend of April 5-7 but the draw for the Hong Kong pools has been made, here’s some copy straight from the tournament page

The pools have been drawn for the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens (5-7 April 2024) at the Hong Kong Stadium, the sixth of eight tournaments on the HSBC SVNS, and the full schedule has now been confirmed.

Pool C sees Ireland – currently second in the standings after finishing as runners-up in Perth and the USA, atop the pool with tenth-placed Spain, eleventh-ranked Samoa and seventh-ranked South Africa, who were winners of the Series opener in Dubai.

In the 12-team women’s competition, a taut battle between Australia and New Zealand is developing, with both sides claiming two cup wins to date. Australia won the two opening legs in Dubai and Cape Town, while New Zealand won the two most recent tournaments in Los Angeles and Vancouver. Ireland won the cup in Perth.

Only four points separate the two women’s leaders ahead of Hong Kong with Australia on 90 and New Zealand on 86. France is in third on 74. USA and Canada round out the top five as the action moves to Hong Kong.

New Zealand top Pool A ahead of France, Brazil and Team Great Britain. Australia head Pool B over South Africa, Ireland and Fiji, while fourth-placed USA head Pool C with Canada, Japan and Spain.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

Some mad results from Round 19, with Toulon’s margin of victory over Montpellier being greater than all the other 6 matches put together.  La Rochelle fell again, but despite having more losses than wins they are still clinging on to a playoff position by their fingernails.  Stu Lancaster’s Racing had a much needed win to keep them up there while Parisian rivals Stade Français inched a little further ahead at the top as Toulouse were edged out in Bayonne.  Round 20 is interesting in that all 7 matches involve one team from the top half against a team from the bottom half so we’ll see if there are any upsets.

PREMIERSHIP UPDATE

After a long, long break the top two, Saints and Quins, both shipped 50 burgers which made this league even tighter than it already was, with now 8 of the ten clubs having won more than they lost so far!!!!  Leicester fans were obviously disappointed by their defeat at home to Glaws, definitely not a good start to preparations for the Aviva in a couple of weekends.  It will be interesting to see how the Tigers approach their trip to Newcastle, who have lost all 13 of their matches so far, this weekend.  Obviously the points are vital but will they hold back some players for Dublin?

Northampton v Sarries seems to be the tie of Round 14 but on the subject of Sarries, this tweet was interesting, we’ll see if anything develops from it…

AIL UPDATE

Feels like a while since there has been an “all Top 4” clash in the Women’s AIL and we have one this weekend when Belvo host Railway Union.

Some big results in the Men’s 1A, first leaders Tarf fell at Belfield Bowl while champions Terenure scored a big win in Cork so while the top four seems pretty much set, with just two rounds to go the race for a home semifinal seems to be all to play for.  Terenure v Clontarf is easily the pick of Round 17 but both will be keeping an eye on Cork Con who host a Ballynahinch side still in with a shout for the playoffs themselves.

This is the time of the season we include the race for promotion to 1A in our updates…St Mary’s have already clinched their spot but the playoff is up for grabs with Old Wesley in 2nd at the moment but with them heading to Templeville Road, it will be a chance for Garryowen and Highfield behind them to catch up.

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC UPDATE

All I can think about in this comp right now is the Plight Of The Crusaders.  Fifth loss in a row, rock bottom of the log, and with David Havilli injured and the second place Chiefs coming to town next, they are going to have to find their mojo soon otherwise we’ll be questioning as to whether even a playoff place is possible.  Hurricanes will look to stay top although they’ll have to win in Otago to do so while the Fijan Drua notched another W albeit after sudden death extra time.

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

Somehow a late score in the Dragons v Bulls match kept me top of the league by just half a point, I had a horrible round 12, although I’d like an official Superbru Stewards Enquiry over my “wooden spoon” for the week – surely “No Picks Keego” should have gotten it?  Anyhoo…as you can see it’s only the fact that I have correctly predicted the winner in more URC matches than anyone else that’s keeping me top (Kino with his stats based approach has him well ahead in the closest to winning margin category) and if I don’t find my mojo soon I could easily slip into the bottom half.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

Really looking forward to returning to the RDS this Friday, we will of course have a preview of the Bulls match earlier in the day, then the wrap will record Sunday evening.

Finally, as ever, be sure to enjoy your Easter ‘egg-chasing’ wherever you are.  JLP

A NEW DAY FOR THE COLUMN…

…literally.  In a bit of housekeeping news we’ve switched this column’s publication date from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning – the Quick Tap videos take so much time to produce we need the extra window to get it all together along with, of course, all the “real world” stuff.

FRONT FIVE

A selection of five eye-catching egg-chasing quotes & links from around the ruggersphere, now including a few thoughts added by myself (JLP).

“The diagnosis of a young person with CTE is significant as it indicates how early in life the brain has been affected by head knocks.”

First professional rugby union player confirmed to have died with CTE

Michael Aylwin – The Guardian

JLP : I know it was the build up to the final round of Six Nations matches and this was a story from the southern hemisphere, but I really think the wider rugby community could have been more engaged with this story.  Unfortunately my second article from this week’s Front Five suggests we are instead moving in a different direction.

…a global red card trial where a carded player is removed for the duration of the match but may be replaced by another player after 20 minutes.

World Rugby reveals phased plan to enhance rugby’s global appeal

http://www.world.rugby

JLP : To be fair, this is but one of several changes being proposed and many of them look like they will genuinely help speed up the game (such as actual enforcement of the “use it” call) but effectively reversing the zero tolerance policy on dangerous tackling technique by allowing a player’s team to replace them after 20m is clearly going in the wrong direction and I hope this proposal falls off the sport’s radar for good.

“People are actually genuinely just excited to get going and see where we’re at with the rest of teams.”

McMahon Looks Forward To Opening Weekend

IrishRugby.ie

JLP : I firmly believe separating the men’s and women’s Six Nations was a good idea, but only if there is enough hype around the start of the women’s because the wider public have been trained over the years to switch off from rugby altogether once the men’s tournament is over, there has generally a drop off in engagement with the men’s provincial level anyway without a top women’s event vying for attention as well.

As for Ireland’s task over the coming weeks, well after a whitewash wooden spoon last season, relative success will be a low bar this time around but hopefully the WXV3 triumph together with the inclusion of some of the sevens players will inspire us to greater things.  Starting away to France isn’t the ideal start, however, and hopefully the media can succeed in realistically portraying our expectations over the coming weeks.

Best wishes to Scott, Edel, Sam & all involved with the team.  There’s a bit more on the Women’s Six Nations further down the column.

Burns’ arrival at Munster will coincide with Joey Carbery’s move to France.

Billy Burns: Munster sign Ulster fly-half on one-year deal

BBC.com

JLP : One of Irish rugby’s poorest kept secrets this season, and if other rumours are to be believed, this isn’t the last out half provincial switch we’ll be reading about this season, with Leinster likely involved in the next announcement.  I’ve never had a problem with these moves, once the player and the teams involved are happy it makes sense that the pieces on the board be moved around once in a while to spread out the talent.

“Sometimes [fans]…are so used to Ireland winning that sometimes the way they win is maybe not what they want”

Jacques Nienaber: Opponents raised their game against Ireland

Michael Glennon – RTE.ie

JLP : I actually spotted this article after I recorded my TIkTok rant for this week, it’s like we’re of one mind, even if we do have different amount of RWC winners’ medals….

WRAP OF A WRAP

Great to have Tom & Rich to help me go back over the Ireland/Scotland match, it might not have been a classic from an attacking standpoint but they did come up with some fascinating talking points from it, one which I actually had to cut out as part of my attempt to keep the whole thing around the hour mark, but FWIW I did post that little discussion on YouTube.

If you missed the wrap pod, here’s a link for Spotify but it’s also available on Apple and other platforms, please subscribe and/or leave a review if you can.

QUICK TAP : DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY

I am always intrigued by the two extremes of rugby watchers, with us hyper-critical nerds at one end and the so-called “casual fans” at the other so I cover that in this week’s QT.

LEINSTER INJURY UPDATE

Obviously the names Keenan and Ryan were not ones we wanted to see on the update although for right now it’s more that of the woefully unfortunate Tommy O’Brien that stands out the most as he most certainly would have featured in Parma at the weekend.

I reckon our 23 to play Zebre will be very similar to what we have seen over the Six Nations period.

WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS LAUNCH INTERVIEW

After I had set up the Front Five segment at the top of this column, I got an email from the organisers of the Women’s Six Nations complete with free-to-use quotes & links from the tournament launch.

I was fascinated not just by the responses of coach Scott Bemand, but more so by the nature of the questions that were put to him and Edel McMahon – they covered some very pertinent issues that one would assume might not be covered in a high profile press conference like this one.

So here is what they released :

Excited?

Scott: Really exciting, a new challenge. We don’t shy away from what went on results wise last 6 Nations but we’ve done WXV, we’ve built some winning momentum and connections and hopefully now just excited to crack into this year’s 6 Nations.

How much value is there in the Celtic Challenge?

Scott: The Celtic Challenge is going to become bigger as we go through, as a preparation tool. It’s actually been hugely beneficial because of the training piece. The results have been pretty close, pretty competitive. The level of challenge has been appropriate. It’s a good way of bringing the group together albeit across two teams.

Have you found it a challenge to have players further apart geographically?

Scott: I don’t know if it’s more of a challenge. It’s a younger programme. With England, professionalism started a few years before so you would say the maturity of their programme is on a couple of years in terms of how people are developing within the programme.

There’s a reasonable amount of touch points, w’ere going to continue to grow those touch points as we go through. I would say the challenges have always existed. But when you get back into camp, there’s a palpable level of excitement to get back in a room together.

Disappointing Championship in 2023. What is outlook now?

Edel: I was injured for the last 6 Nations so my mindset is a little bit different. A lot of girls have grown since that campaign to be senior players, stepping it up having been to a successful WXV. Like Scott was saying they’ve had an opportunity to play in the Celtic Challenge. We’ve seen where we’ve grown from those performances until now. I think people are excited to see where we’re at.

 What is target?

Edel: To qualify for the World Cup. We’ve spoken as a squad, that’s what we want to achieve.

Lots of talk about 7s programme. Is it frustrating that you won’t have access to some of your best players throughout the Championship?

Scott: There’s a strategic goal to do well at the Olympics, there’s a strategic goal to qualify for the World Cup. We’ve got some 7s girls in the programme going into the 6 Nations which will be a continued big part of our pool of players.

Other nations have done it reasonably successfully. You look at New Zealand at the last World Cup with some of the 7s girls coming back into the XVs programme. It can be done.

They’re great people. They add a bit to the environment as well. I think as we get more seamless with those transitions it’ll become smoother and smoother.

When does it get to that next step where the programmes are independent?

Where the game is in terms of playing numbers, that may be some years off. The challenge we face is to get better at transitioning and both succeeding. If we’re successful at an Olympics and a World Cup, that’s got to shine a great spotlight on women’s rugby in Ireland. That’s going to get more interest and traction and help us grow the game.

On the Celtic Challenge, how much of a look-in have you seen to how it’s bridging the gap from the club game to international?

It was coached by IRFU coaches, so it’s almost inside our circle. We had some great conversations. There’s a big piece about the development of coaches, how you can get enough training and support to improve on-pitch performance. There was Ireland coaches at every session. It was hand in hand.

 Playing France in France?

Edel: I got to play there two years ago in Toulouse and that was a full crowd. We chat about our experiences on the pitch. I heard quite a lot of noise – from a line break, a big hit, a try score, a turnover of momentum. That was engulfed on the pitch. From an Irish perspective maybe they liked us a bit more than ye found them (to Scott). You kind of zone out of it. It’s an experience to relish.

Sometimes they’ve turned on their own when they make a mistake but it’s a cool experience.

Are you getting enough of a test from prior opponents through WXV or Celtic Challenge?

Scott: It’s a fair point. WXV3 – putting 100 points on Kazakhstan, perhaps it’s not the level of challenge you need going into a 6 Nations. The things that we can control is the training piece. Had experience before about how you can make some quite big gains with how competitive you can make training. Players seem to buy into it as well instead of just drilling.

Being able to try and win it in training. We’ve made it not about preparing a team but preparing a squad. That was one of the successes of WXV3. Girls that were either on the bench or not involved would have felt that they were being prepared and improved to attack training and show what they can do which breeds natural competition. The Spain game did give us a bit of physical nuance. Going into a France game, we know it’s going to be physical, we know what to expect.

I’d like to think the levels of training would prepare us for that.

What is the contracts scenario in Ireland?

There’s currently 43 contracts which is a merge of the 7s and XVs. They got that going relatively not that long ago. So in terms of cycles, it’s in its first iteration. There’s real intent to grow that and to grow that quickly. Post 6 Nations we’ll review that and see where we stand with it – who is developing, progressing and which new players are coming into the market. Celtic Challenge has definitely shown some youngsters coming up through.

Have you spoken to Cliodhna Moloney?

Scott: I know Cli from being based in the UK. I’ve spoken to Cli informally just around wider stuff. There’ll be a time but at the moment it sits where it sits.

A BONUS TALKING POINT

I simply couldn’t resist getting my sarcasm on after France beat England in that final match, not to rub it in for the English fans rather those in their media who tried to push the narrative that should the results go another way and Ireland win the title on bonus points despite having fewer wins than England (a mathematical possibility that has always been possible in over two decades since we’ve had this method in rugby), it would somehow de-legitimize us winning the trophy.

Bottom line is that while this is not my ideal method for deciding a rugby tournament winner, the fact that everyone knows the rules as it kicks off means nobody should really complain about it afterwards.

🔝🐱🐴 UPDATE

I was actually surprised the 🔝🐱🐴 was willing to take a week off even for the final round of Six Nations matches, but anyway it’s back this week and with just eight rounds left and the gap in match points between 6th (last playoff place) and 13th (top relegation place) just NINE, pretty much every match will be significant over the coming weeks.  Bordeaux v Toulouse seems to be the pick of Round 19.

PREMIERSHIP UPDATE

After a super-long mid season break during which they played out the final matches in the Cup as well as had those money-spinning friendlies with Leinster & Munster, the Premiership kicks back into gear this weekend and has 6 rounds to go.  Northampton lead the way but it’s all to play for as only two of the ten clubs have a losing record.  Saracens v Quins seems to be the tie of the round.

AIL UPDATE

A rare upset in this league last weekend when Suttonians, outside the top 4, won convincingly away to Blackrock College, although with Ballincollig falling to runaway leaders UL Bohs the gap between the playoff places and the rest remains the same.  The league takes a break this weekend, presumedly to make way for the launch of the Women’s Six Nations.

Over in the men’s AIL, only three matches left in the regular season and easily the tie of the round is Ballynahinch hosting Lansdowne, more than likely the Ulster side’s last chance of staying in touch with the top four.  Cork Con hosting Terenure also looks tasty.

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC UPDATE

Eh, do we need to talk about the Crusaders?  I mean, obviously with eight of the twelves teams making the playoffs there is still plenty of time for them to claw their way back and who among us would rule them out from securing their millionth SR title, but four defeats out of four to start the season?  Wowza.  I watched their defeat to the league leading Hurricanes last Friday and it certainly wasn’t the Saders I’ve been used to seeing.  Almost reminded me of Leinster’s Matt O’Connor years…anyway overall it’s good for this league to see Aussie teams with winning records plus Moana & the Drua picking up wins.  For me Blues v Crusaders is the standout match from the next round.

ROUND 4

CRUSADERS 10-14 HURRICANES

REBELS 26-53 REDS

MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY UPDATE

Have to say I was disappointed to see that the MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY was in fact using the conference system this season, having only seen one league table over the first few weeks I thought maybe they had seen sense and gone for a model simpler to Super Rugby.  Anywho…after three rounds only Seattle and Houston are 100% and they play each other next weekend while my “adopted team” the Chicago Hounds have had a mixed opening three weeks so far and the visit of New England next time out will definitely be a challenge.

Round 3

NEW ENGLAND 27-21 NOLA GOLD

OLD GLORY 22-22 CHICAGO

HOUSTON 30-19 MIAMI

UTAH 13-23 SEATTLE

SAN DIEGO 19-18 LOS ANGELES

RUGBY EUROPE CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

No real surprise here with Georgia capturing another title and I have to say it was ironic that France chose to move their Six Nations fixtures away from Paris because of the Olympic preparations yet this final was held at the Stade Jean Bouin when maybe it could have enjoyed a better atmosphere in either Tblisi or Lisbon?  Anyway if you missed the highlights here they are…

HARPIN PREDICTION LEAGUE

Congrats to Kristian who convincingly won our Six Nations Superbru – he successfully predicted 12 of the 15 results, as did I although with nowhere near enough “margin accuracy” meaning I just about pipped Jay to 2nd spot.

Anyway now it’s back to the big prize, namely the Harpin URC Prediction League which of course resumes this weekend.  As you see I am in line to retain my title if I keep going as I have but there’s still a long way to go.

NEXT BATCH OF HARPIN’

In my Quick Tap video I point out the contrast between a Six Nations title decider for Ireland in Dublin one week and a URC regular season fixture for Leinster in Parma the next, but here at Harpin Manor we will of course still be giving it the full Harpin treatment starting with a preview on Friday, as ever stay tuned to all our usual places in the ruggersphere for all our content.

Finally, as ever, be sure to enjoy your rugby wherever you are.  JLP
